March Point Rd. 6 Left into March Point Park & Ride. 7 miles Elevation Gain 5850 feet ROAD CONDITIONS: Winding roads with narrow shoulders, short stretch of gravel road, steep 5-plus mile climb up Mount Constitution. Bike turnouts. GETTING THERE: Take I-5 to exit 230 in Burlington. Head west on SR 20 for 13 miles to Anacortes. Turn right onto Commercial Ave. and, a mile ahead, left on 12th St. following signs for Washington State Ferries.

    The road doesn’t have much of a shoulder, but thankfully, with Interstate 5 paralleling it not much more than a stone’s throw away, it doesn’t have a lot of traffic. Just ahead bear left as 99 becomes Nulle Road, crosses back under the freeway, and cozies up along Lake Samish. For this route, turn right onto E. 5 miles before climbing out of the basin. (A variation is to add a few miles by continuing straight and turning right onto W. ) It’s a mile-long climb, not too terrible, especially since this route cuts the climb in half by turning left onto Old Samish Road.

    A couple stretches of state highway have the potential for high-speed traffic, but there are ample road shoulders. GETTING THERE: From I-5, take exit 250 in Bellingham and head west on Old Fairhaven Pkwy. 4 miles into Fairhaven, Bellingham’s southside neighborhood. Turn right on 12th St. 1 mile, left onto Harris Ave. Continue for two blocks to 10th St. and turn right. The Village Green, an open space used for gatherings, fairs, and outdoor movies, is on the right. Free on-street parking is available throughout Fairhaven.
